Posted on November 11th, 2023

Are you an adventure enthusiast looking to experience the awe-inspiring power of Mother Nature up close and personal? If so, Dark Sky Adventures has just the adventure for you! Our tornado tours offer a thrilling opportunity to witness the raw beauty and power of tornadoes in their natural habitat. To ensure you have the best experience possible, it's essential to pack the right gear and follow some expert tips. In this guide, we'll walk you through everything you need to know to prepare for your tornado tour with us.

Clothing Essentials

Weather in the great plains in the spring can vary greatly. You can go from hot and humid during the day before storms initiate, to windy and chilly near storms and at night. Packing light and comfortable is key and being prepared for a wide range of temperatures. Keeping it to one suitcase/travel bag and one personal bag is key, as room is limited within the chase vehicle. Close toed shoes are also highly recommended, as roads we stop on can be wet and muddy.

Safety Equipment

Safety is our top priority at Dark Sky Adventures. Having some personal safety equipment can enhance your comfort and peace of mind.

Safety Glasses

Tornadoes and storms can kick up dust and debris, which can be hazardous to your eyes. A pair of safety glasses with side shields will protect your eyes from flying debris while still allowing you to witness the tornado's beauty.

First Aid Kit

We will have small first aid kit with us in the chase vehicle in the event minor injuries occur, although this is a rare occurance.

Photography and Recording Gear

Capturing the mesmerizing beauty of tornadoes is one of the highlights of our tours. Here's what you need to ensure you capture the perfect storm:

DSLR Camera With Wide-Angle Lens

To capture the grandeur of tornadoes, a DSLR camera with a wide-angle lens is a must. This setup allows you to capture the entire scene in stunning detail.

Tripod

Tornadoes and storms can be unpredictable, and you'll want a stable platform for your camera. A sturdy tripod will help you capture long-exposure shots and steady video footage.

Spare Batteries and Memory Cards

Don't miss out on the perfect shot because your camera ran out of power or storage space. Pack spare batteries and memory cards to keep shooting throughout the tour.

Snacks and Hydration

Chasing tornadoes can be an exhilarating and energy-consuming experience. Staying hydrated and nourished is essential for a successful tour.

Water

Bring a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated throughout the day. It's crucial to drink plenty of water, especially if you're out in the sun for extended periods.

High-Energy Snacks

Pack energy-boosting snacks like granola bars, nuts, and dried fruits to keep your energy levels up. These snacks are convenient and won't take up much space in your bag.

Cooler or Insulated Bag

Dark Sky Adventures will be providing a cooler to provide guests with cold bottles of water throughout the tour.

Miscellaneous Items

Lastly, here are some miscellaneous items that can enhance your tornado tour experience:

Sunscreen and Bug Spray

Protect your skin from the sun's harmful rays and annoying insect bites with sunscreen and bug spray.

Notepad and Pen

Taking notes on your observations and experiences during the tour can be a rewarding part of the journey. Pack a small notepad and pen to document your thoughts.

Cash and Identification

Carry some cash and a form of identification with you. You never know when you might need them during the tour.

Capturing the Perfect Storm: Photography Tips for Storm Chasers

As a storm chaser, capturing the perfect tornado photo or video is undoubtedly one of your goals. Here are some photography tips to help you make the most of your tornado tour:

  • Use a Fast Shutter Speed: Tornadoes can move surprisingly quickly. Use a fast shutter speed to freeze the action and capture sharp images.
